QUESTION: I have to do a lot of scrolling right and left to see everything on the screens. How do I change my screen settings to reduce the amount of scrolling?
Answer: You can go to the Windows Control Panel, open the Display icon, and change the Settings for Screen Area (Desktop Area) to a higher value than you find there. If your system allows you to do so and you are comfortable with the affect, change the setting to 1024x768 pixels. You will have to restart your computer for the new settings to work.

QUESTION: Many of the photographs seem to have strange colors. How do I get the true colors of the photos?
Answer: You can go to the Windows Control Panel, open the Display icon, and change the Settings for Colors to High Color or True Color. You will have to restart your computer for the new settings to work.

QUESTION: How can I speed up the display of the photographs on this site?
Answer: Transfering the photographs to your display takes a lot of data movement. You can speed up the display by getting a faster modem or get an alernative to a modem. Modems are rated at transfer rates in bits per second (bps). The maximum modem speed you can get is 56,000 bps (56 Kbps). The actual connection speed, however, is often less than that top speed. If you want really fast communications, try the following services:
- FastAccess (DSL); operates at speeds from 256K to 1.5 Mbps (see DSL hotlinks below)
- Cable modem from Time Warner Cable
Be sure your Internet Service Provider supports these high-speed connections before you go to the trouble and expense of installing one. Bell South advertises higher speeds than they typically provide.

QUESTION: Sometimes this web site operates faster than at other times. Why is there so much variation?
Answer: We are operating our CYC web site under the Homestead site. We have no control over their operations. When their servers are overloaded, the users suffer.

QUESTION: Why does the text and art get all scrambled up on some pages?
Answer: The Homestead Publisher software used to create these screens assumes you have at least version 4.0 of the Netscape Navigator or the Internet Explorer. If you do not have these versions or later (or if you have WebTV), your browser will not know how to handle some of the HTML language this site spews forth. A good example is the tickker tape banner on the home page. Older browsers cannot display the banner as a moving display.

QUESTION: Why is there text overlap when I view my page on the Web?
Answer: The problem may be a function of the font settings on your computer. In this context, font size refers not to the size of the fonts that you put in your Homestead Web site, but to a setting that you can change on your computer. You can set your computer so that text on the screen, like the word 'Start' in the lower left corner of the screen, is displayed in large fonts. If your computer is set to display large fonts, your pages will look strange when you try to view it.

To set your computer to display small fonts:
1. Click the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen. (A menu should appear.)
2. Move the mouse over Settings. (A sub-menu should appear.)
3. Click Control Panel. (The Control Panel window should appear.)
4. Double-click Display. (The Display Properties dialog box should appear.)
5. Click the Settings tab to bring it to the front.
6. From the Font Size drop-down box, choose Small Fonts.

You may need to restart your computer before the new font size will go into effect.
